Enhanced Skills Program: Indigenous Health Emergency Medicine Rotation Goals and Objectives

Medical Expert

The trainee will be able to:

  • Distinguish seriously ill patients from the patients with minor illness or injury.
  • Recognize, evaluate and initiate the management of the critically ill patient
  • Support and stabilize the acutely ill patient and arrange appropriate management and referral.
  • Recognize, evaluate and initiate management of non-acute illness and injury.
  • Order appropriate laboratory and radiological investigations, understanding their limitations and impact on patient management in the Emergency Department setting.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in procedural skills including the understanding of indications, contraindications, potential complications; proper preparation, technique and follow-up
  • Demonstrate effective pain management skills for both acute and chronic pain presentations in the Emergency Department.

Communicator

The trainee will be able to:

  • Obtain informed consent for procedures in the emergency department, providing sufficient information regarding risks and benefits of treatment alternatives
  • Facilitate a therapeutic doctor-patient relationship with patients and their families that is characterized by understanding, trust, respect, honesty and empathy.
  • Display effective and timely verbal and written communication skills, including communicating with patients and families, documentation and consult letters, use of EMR systems.
  • Written orders, progress notes and consult notes are well organized, timely and legible.
  • Demonstrate skills in working and patients to overcome communication challenges including anger, confusion, sensory or cognitive impairment, socio-economic or ethno-cultural differences

Collaborator

The trainee will be able to:

  • Participate effectively and appropriately in an interprofessional healthcare team.
  • Collaborate with community agencies (as required) and other members of the healthcare team to achieve optimal patient care.
  • Provide effective and timely verbal presentation of consultations to colleagues.

Leader

The trainee will be able to:

  • Assess, plan, provide and integrate care for patients.
  • Demonstrate thoughtful and responsible use of resources in the provision of patient care, allowing for comprehensive and necessary evaluation while avoiding unnecessary interventions.

Health Advocate

The Trainee will be able to:

  • Use his/her role as a physician in the Emergency Department to influence and advance the health and well-being of patients and the community.
  • Advocate effectively for the biopsychosocial needs of patients and their families within the health care system and community
  • Demonstrate awareness of community and health resources, and support structures available to the patient population. Establish and ensure appropriate support systems and follow-up for the patient population.

Scholar

The Trainee will be able to:

  • Maintain and enhance professional activities through ongoing learning.
  • Effectively uses evidence in day to day clinical work. Reads around cases and is knowledgeable about own patients.
  • Identify areas of own knowledge gaps and demonstrate motivation and strategies for self-learning

Professional

The Trainee will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a commitment to patients and their families, colleagues, their profession and to society through ethical and reflective practice.
