Developing your leadership skills is an integral part of successfully running your own clinical practice. The Department of Family and Community Medicine runs an annual accredited leadership program for health professionals that will give you effective and applicable tools to help you become a better leader.
In this exciting workshop series, you will hear from distinguished speakers and learn to identify and analyze your leadership style to help you:
- Be an authentic leader
- Present effectively
- Be culturally fluent
- Coach,mentor and advocate for others
- Manage change within your organization
- Network and engage with others

How many sessions are there? The series is one full-day session and three half-day sessions. Attendees can register for individual sessions of their choice, or attend all four sessions for a discounted price. See below for session information and fees.
This Group Learning program has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Ontario Chapter for up to 10 Mainpro+ credits.

Full-Day Session with Keynote Address: Intention, Surprise and Opportunity - Three Flavours of Leadership
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Katherine Rouleau
Dr. Rouleau is a family physician at St. Michael’s Hospital and Vice-Chair of Global Health and Social Accountability in the Department of Family and Community Medicine.
She is co-director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre on Family Medicine & Primary Care and Director of Besrour Centre, College of Family Physicians of Canada.
Her clinical practice is focused on the care of underserved and marginalized populations. Internationally, her activities have focused on collaboration to support the development of family medicine in low and middle-income countries.
Her academic activities focus on global health and global health education, capacity-building in primary care and family medicine, and leadership.

March 5th, 2019: Half-Day Session 1 - "Cultural Fluency"
Presenter: Professor Nouman Ashraf
Nouman Ashraf is an Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream within the Organizational Behavior area at the Rotman School of Management.
He possesses a broad range of professional, academic and research interests, with a specialized focus on enabling inclusive and innovative practices within teams, organizations and boards. For the last decade and a half, he has held progressively senior roles at the University of Toronto. He is a recognized thought leader in governance, and has taught thousands of directors in the national Rotman program on Not for Profit Governance in partnership with the Institute for Corporate Directors since its inception in 2007.
Winner of numerous teaching awards, Nouman teaches Emancipatory Leadership within the OMNIUM GEMBA program, Leading Social Innovation with the 2 and 3 year MBA program and Leading Across Differences within the Rotman Commerce Program.
Nouman has advised numerous clients such as Shopper’s Drugmart, Tory’s, the Canada Pension Plan and Investment Board, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the Ontario Trillium Foundation, United Way Toronto, and numerous post-secondary and healthcare institutions.
Nouman serves as Teaching Fellow at the Institute for Gender + the Economy. He is also an Associate at Trinity College within the University of Toronto.
At lunch time, he can be found at Massey College within the University of Toronto, where he mentors exceptional post-graduate students in his capacity as Senior Fellow Emeritus.

May 7th, 2019: Half-Day Session 2 - Powerful Presence
Presenter: Mila Naimark, President of Clockwork Talk
Whether you are meeting one-on-one with a client, speaking at a small team meeting, or delivering a keynote at a conference, the first step is getting the message right. This can be challenging when decisions are critical, deadlines are tight, and stakeholders are resistant. This intensive workshop gives you the tools to create and fine-tune powerful messages that spark action and shift attitudes.
Mila offers more than twenty-five years of experience in global leadership communication. She excels at helping clients get to the heart of the matter, with strategies that ensure their presentations – and their delivery skills – produce the right results. An insightful diagnostician and patient yet forthright instructor, Mila is highly in demand as a consultant, facilitator and coach.

Half Day Session 3 - Pearls and Pitfalls in Leadership - From Suburban Family Practice to CMA Presidency
Presenter: Dr. Sandy Buchman
Dr. Sandy Buchman received his medical degree from McMaster University in 1981 and completed his family medicine residency training at the University of Toronto in 1983.
He is an associate professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto and provides home-based palliative and end-of-life care through the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care in Toronto. He is also involved with the Palliative Education and Care for the Homeless program out of Inner City Health Associates in Toronto.
He has practised comprehensive family medicine for many years with a special interest in primary care cancer care, palliative care, HIV/AIDS, global health and social accountability. He currently serves as the medical lead for a group working to build the new residential Neshama Hospice in Toronto. He recently chaired the Primary Care Committee of the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer and the Social Accountability Working Group of the College of Family Physicians of Canada. He was president of the College of Family Physicians of Canada in 2011–2012 and the Ontario College of Family Physicians in 2005–2006.
Dr. Buchman has received several awards for his work as a family physician, including the Award of Excellence from the College of Family Physicians of Canada for his work as regional primary care lead for the Toronto Regional Cancer Program at Cancer Care Ontario. He was also recognized as Family Physician of the Year for Southern Ontario by the Ontario College of Family Physicians.
Outside of his medical practice, Dr. Buchman has devoted many volunteer hours to helping provide hospice care for the homeless and has also participated in medical missions to Africa and South America.
