On June 10, 2020, the University of Toronto Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM) hosted a live virtual graduation ceremony for graduating residents. Due to COVID-19, all in-person events were cancelled or postponed, so a traditional graduation ceremony could not be held this year.

Recent acts of racial violence including the death of George Floyd have sparked widespread public protest against anti-Black racism across North America. The Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM) denounces anti-Black racism, and joins with those experiencing grief, anger, and frustration - not only toward these recent events, but toward the historic and ongoing impacts of systemic racism and injustice that continually affect Black communities.

Dr. Ritika Goel is now the University of Toronto Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM)’s first Faculty Lead in Social Accountability. In the role, Dr. Goel will have an opportunity to think systematically about how DFCM infuses social accountability into our work, whether as clinicians, teachers, researchers, leaders or advocates.
