Undergraduate Emergency Medicine Education

Enriching Educational Experiences (years one and two)

Enriching Educational Experiences (EEEs) are short-term placements organized between students and the physicians they would like to shadow. This gives students the opportunity to spend time in a clinical setting, observe their host physician's practice, and learn about their specialty.

Clerkship (year three)

Dr. Michelle Klaiman MD FRCPC is the Course Director and Dr. Adam Kaufman MD CCFP(EM) is the Associate Course Director for Emergency Medicine in undergraduate medical education at the University of Toronto.  Together, they oversee orientation, training, assessment, and evaluation for clinical clerks rotating through the various U of T-affiliated emergency departments. Interested emergency medicine faculty members can become involved in teaching through the orientation bootcamp and the Observed Structured Clinical Exams (OSCEs). If you have a U of T faculty appointment and wish to become more involved in teaching and education, please contact the administrative coordinator for undergraduate EM, Nancy Medeiros, directly for more details.

EM Elective Rotations (year four)

Elective studies take place over 13 weeks in the final MD year to help students choose their focus. EM Elective Rotations allow students to experience working in emergency departments (EDs) and gain independence and confidence while managing their own patients. Electives take place between September and December every year and last between two to six weeks.
