Impact

Family physicians and other primary care professionals are front line care providers. They are often a patient’s first point of contact and entry into the healthcare system.

Creating family physicians of the future

The Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM) is one of the largest and most highly recognized departments of family medicine in the world. We train almost 40% of Ontario's family physicians who go on to practice across Ontario, from downtown Toronto to Moose Jaw and many places in between.

DFCM is educating the next generation of family doctors to provide care at a time when Canada’s population is aging and will require more physicians providing comprehensive care than ever before.

Did you know?

  • More than 90% of Canadians indicate that a family physician is the first person they would turn to in order to address their medical problems
  • 66% of Canadians believe family physicians are the most important health professionals they see
  • On average, 1 additional family physician per 10,000 people is associated with a 5.3% reduction in mortality

Building a better health care system

DFCM is composed of health care professionals dedicated to leadership in education, research and clinical care. Our reach is local, national and global. We are playing a central role in ensuring health system integration and cost-effective care. Many of our faculty are engaged in advocacy work, ensuring that all patients - including the most vulnerable - have access to care.
